Chapter Seven
Addie
Over the next two weeks, Roan sends something daily, either flowers or a gift. The shops in Main Street Row love the extra business, but Iâm slowly dying. Every day, I wake up hoping my heart has healed overnight. The pain is eating away at my soul, and Iâm terrified this is a permanent situation.
Rena, my assistant, glances over at me and frowns. Trying to cheer me up, sheâs brought in donuts and sweets every time she works. As I feed my sorrows, my hips are expanding. âIf you want to take a break, I can handle the store.â She smiles at me, and I realize Iâve been wiping the same case for the last fifteen minutes.
My response dies on my lips when the bell over the door jingles. A stunning older woman breezes into the shop. Iâve lived in Chestnut Landing my entire life, and I know everyone in this tiny town. She isnât a local resident. And, her designer suit and diamonds definitely scream money. Iâm sure her elegant hairstyle didnât come from The Cut Above in Main Street Row. Her piercing blue eyes move around the room and stop on me. âMy goodness. Youâre even more beautiful than Sheila described. That son of mine is an idiot.â
Of course, sheâs Mrs. Banks. Swallowing, I attempt to smile, but it comes out more like a grimace. Walking around the counter, I hold out my hand and lie. âYou must be Roanâs mother. How nice to meet you.â
As she pulls me close for a hug, her perfume causes my eyes to water. She steps back and shakes her head. âI hope you donât mind me dropping in unannounced. I wanted to meet you and see if I could talk to you on my idiot sonâs behalf.â
Freaking great. âMrs. Banks, Iâm sorry...â I begin, but she holds up her hand and cuts me off.
âPlease, call me Gloria.â She clasps her hands together and asks, âWould you have lunch with me so we can discuss this?â How can I get out of this? I look over at Rena and silently beg her to help me.
My assistant ignores my plea and smiles at our visitor. âI can handle the store. Have a great time at lunch.â
Shooting her a disappointed glare, I hesitantly agree. âLet me grab my purse. Iâll be right back.â
I spend the next hour and a half listening to Gloria describe all the wonderful things her two sons have done. Evidently, Roan has a twin brother named Rome, which is news to me. I guess we didnât have a chance to become very well-acquainted before I discovered his lies. She shares funny stories from their childhoods and attempts to sneak in reasons I should forgive her oldest son. By the time I make up an excuse to head back to the store, my heart is stinging from all the reminders of Roan. As I promise Gloria weâll have another lunch before she leaves town, I know Iâm lying. Seeing her brings too many memories of Roan.
